PART B. GRAMMAR
COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES
COMPARATIVE DEGREE (So sánh tính từ ở bậc hơn)
 
a. Hình thức so sánh hơn của các tính từ có một âm tiết (tính từ ngắn).
 

(be) + short adjective-er + than

Laura is taller than I am.
Your house is bigger than mine.
 
b. Hình thức so sánh hơn của các tính từ có hai âm tiết trở lên (tính từ dài).
 

more + long adjective + than

I still think this film is more exciting.
She is more wonderful than her sister.
 
2. SUPERLATIVE (So sánh tính từ ở bậc hơn nhất.)

a. Hình thức so sánh bậc nhất của các tính từ có một âm tiết (tính từ ngắn).
 

(be) + the + short adjective - est

Who is the tallest in your family?
My mom is always the kindest woman I have ever known
 
b. Hình thức so sánh bậc nhất của các tính từ có hai âm tiết trở lên (tính từ dài).
 

(be) + the most + long adjective

Is this book the most interesting?
Tom is the most intelligent of my friends.
 
* Lưu ý:
 
a. Đối với một số tính từ ta phải gấp đôi mẫu từ cuối trước khi thêm -er hoặc –est.  
 
big - bigger - the biggest
wet - Wetter - the wettest
hot - hotter - the hottest
 
b. Các tính từ có hai âm tiết thường có hình thức so sánh hơn là “more + adjective + than” Nhưng khi những tính từ có hai âm tiết tận cùng bằng “-y” như “happy”. “easy”. “funny” thì hình thức so sánh hơn là “adjective-er + than” và hình thức so sánh nhất là “the + adjective- est”.

easy - easier - the easiest
happy - happier - the happiest
 
c. Các tính từ có hai âm tiết khác thường có dạng so sánh hơn là -er và so sánh nhất là -est là những tính từ tận cùng bằng “-le”, “-ow”, “-er”.
 
noble - nobler - the noblest
new -  newer - the newest
clever - cleverer - the cleverest
 
d. Hình thức so sánh bậc hơn và so sánh bậc nhất của các tính từ bất quy tắc.
 
good - better - the best
bad - worse - the worst
far - farther / further - the farthest / the furthest
