II. GRAMMAR
Articles - Mạo từ (hay Quán từ): A/AN và THE.

Chúng ta đã gặp cả hai loại mạo từ bất định (a/an) và xác định (the). Ta hãy xem các ví dụ này:

1) There is a park near my house.
Có một công viên gần nhà tôi.

2) There are trees and flowers near the park.
Có cây và hoa trong công viên này.

Nói một cách đơn giản, khi một vật hay người được nhắc đến lần đầu tiên, có nghĩa là người nghe chưa hề biết đến sự có mặt của một người hay vật như thế, ta dùng mạo từ bất định a/an trước danh từ chỉ vật hay người ấy.

Trong ví dụ (1), park là vật được nhắc đến lần đầu.

Khi ta dùng the trước từ park như trong ví dụ (2) trên đây, thì từ park đã được nhắc đến lần thứ hai. Người nghe đã biết đó là cái công viên gần nhà người nói.

Trong đa số trường hợp, ta dùng từ này hay ấy để dịch mạo từ xác định the.

III. Phần dịch và trả lời các bài tập.
A. Our house - Nhà của chúng tôi

To the left of the house, there is a well.
To the right of the house, there are flowers.

The restaurant is opposite the drugstore.
